Cross-State Movers Cost: How to Assess and Compare Moving Quotes

Three movers walk through the same three-bedroom house. A week later, three quotes land in your inbox, and the gap between the highest and lowest is close to $2,000.

Booking the cheapest one feels like the obvious choice. Sometimes it is. Often, though, the low number just leaves something out: the piano, the attic, the third-floor walk-up at the new place, or real protection for your belongings if something breaks.

Cross-state movers cost what they cost for predictable reasons. Once you know what those reasons are, comparing quotes gets a lot less mysterious. Here's what drives the price, what a typical move runs, and how to line up competing quotes so you're comparing the same move.

What Drives Cross-State Movers Cost

Local moves are typically billed by the hour, but once you cross a state line, the pricing model changes. Your mover charges based on the weight of your shipment and the distance it travels, using its published tariff rates. Everything else adjusts that base.

  • Shipment weight. This is the biggest factor. Every item in the house, garage, attic, and any off-site storage unit adds to it.
  • Distance. More miles mean more fuel, more driver hours, and more days the truck is committed to your load.
  • Packing services. Full-service packing adds labor and materials. Packing a few rooms yourself trims the total.
  • Access challenges. Long walks from the truck to the door, stairs, elevators, or a street too narrow for a tractor-trailer (which calls for a smaller shuttle truck) can potentially increase the cost.
  • Specialty items. Pianos, safes, pool tables, and large artwork may need extra crew, equipment, or custom crating.
  • Timing. Summer, month-end, and weekend dates are in the highest demand, and pricing tends to reflect it.
  • Storage. If your new home isn't ready, storage-in-transit adds a monthly rate plus handling.
  • Valuation coverage. Basic coverage is included at no charge. Full Value Protection costs more but covers far more (details below).

How Much Does It Cost to Move Across States?

Most households moving to another state with professional movers spend somewhere between $2,300 and $18,000. Where you land depends mostly on home size and mileage:

Distance Studio to 1 Bedroom 2 to 3 Bedrooms 4 to 5 Bedrooms
250 miles $2,300 to $3,300 $4,800 to $6,500 $7,500 to $10,000
1,000+ miles $3,100 to $4,000 $7,000 to $9,300 $11,200 to $15,100
2,500+ miles $3,600 to $4,900 $8,600 to $11,400 $13,800 to $18,400

These are typical ranges, not quotes. The only reliable way to know how much it costs to hire movers across states for your household is an estimate built on your actual inventory. Start With an Accurate Estimate

A quote is only as good as the information behind it. Since interstate pricing is based on weight, your mover needs to see, or at least clearly understand, everything you plan to take.

Get a Survey, Not a Guess

For anything bigger than a small apartment, a move consultant should walk through your home room by room, in person or by video. That includes closets, the garage, the attic, and the shed. Phone estimates can work for small moves, but a full household priced sight unseen is little more than a rough number.

Stewart offers three ways to get an estimate, including in-home and online options.

Tell Your Move Consultant Everything

Items you forget to mention during the survey still count on moving day. Be upfront about:

  • Anything in a storage unit or at a second location
  • Furniture you're still deciding whether to keep
  • Oversized or specialty pieces
  • Stairs, elevators, long walks, parking limits, or HOA rules at either address
  • Whether your dates are flexible

Ask What Could Change the Final Price

Before you sign, ask your move consultant directly: What would make this number go up? Adding items, changing the delivery address, needing storage, and access issues discovered on moving day are the usual reasons. A reputable mover will answer clearly and put it in writing.

How to Compare Moving Quotes Side by Side

When the quotes come in, resist the urge to skip to the bottom line. Line them up and check these points first:

  • The same inventory. Compare estimated weights or item lists. If one quote comes in 2,000 pounds lighter than the others, it's probably missing part of your home.
  • The same services. Does each quote include packing, furniture disassembly and reassembly, and appliance disconnection, or only some of them?
  • The same valuation coverage. Released Value Protection is included at no cost, paying $0.60 per pound per article. Full Value Protection covers repair, replacement, or reimbursement at today's value, calculated at $6.00 per pound of your shipment or $6,000, whichever is greater.
  • Extra charges listed upfront. Shuttle trucks, long carries, stairs, and specialty handling belong on the estimate, not as surprises on the final bill.
  • Pickup and delivery windows. A lower price paired with a wide delivery window can mean a longer wait for your belongings.
  • Storage terms. If you'll need storage, compare monthly rates, handling fees, and how the facility is secured.
  • Deposit and payment terms. Know when payment is due and how much is required before moving day.
  • Who's actually moving you. Some companies that provide quotes are brokers that sell your job to another carrier. Ask whose trucks and crew will show up.

Red Flags to Watch For

A few warning signs are worth a closer look before you commit:

  • A price far below every other quote, with no clear explanation
  • A large cash deposit required before moving day
  • No USDOT number on the website or paperwork, or one you can't verify with the FMCSA
  • A full-house quote given without anyone seeing your belongings
  • A company name that changes between the quote and the contract
  • Pressure to sign today

One of these is a reason to ask questions. Two or more is a good reason to keep looking.

Cross-State Moving Cost FAQs

Is the lowest quote always the cheapest move?

Not always. A quote that leaves out items, services, or access fees can climb once moving day reveals what was missed. Compare what each quote includes before you compare totals.

Why do quotes from different movers vary so much?

Estimated weight is the usual culprit. Movers who survey your home thoroughly tend to estimate more accurately. Differences in included services, valuation coverage, and date flexibility account for most of the rest.

Do I need an in-home survey for a cross-state move?

For most households, yes, whether it happens in person or by video. Weight drives the price, so the more accurately your mover sees your inventory, the more reliable your estimate will be.

Compare the Move, Not Just the Price

The best quote isn't simply the lowest number on the page. It's the one that reflects your whole household, spells out every service and charge, and comes from a carrier you've verified. An hour spent comparing quotes line by line tells you exactly what you're paying for before the truck ever pulls up.
