Under a full PPM, you're typically reimbursed a set percentage of that amount before tax, so confirm the current figure with your finance office before you plan your budget around it. That reimbursement is meant to cover truck rental, fuel, packing materials, and labor, not to function as extra income, though many families do come out ahead if they move efficiently.
Getting Your Weight Tickets Right
Reimbursement depends on documented weight, not an estimate. You'll need an empty weight ticket before loading and a full weight ticket after, both from a certified scale, both with your name and vehicle information clearly recorded. A missing or illegible ticket is one of the most common reasons a PPM claim gets kicked back for correction, which can delay payment by weeks.
Requesting an Advance Operating Allowance
You don't have to front the entire cost of a PPM out of pocket. A partial DITY, or partial PPM, lets you move part of your household goods yourself while a government-arranged carrier handles the rest. Reimbursement for the partial portion follows the same weight-based rate as a full PPM, calculated only against the weight you personally moved. This option tends to suit families who want to hand-carry high-value or fragile items themselves while leaving furniture and bulk items to a contracted mover.
Is PPM Reimbursement Taxable?
The profit portion of your PPM payment, the amount left over after documented expenses, is generally treated as taxable income and may have taxes withheld before you receive it. Keeping receipts for truck rental, packing materials, fuel, and lodging during the move can offset that taxable amount, since documented expenses are typically deducted before the taxable profit is calculated. This is another reason the same folder holding your weight tickets should also hold every expense receipt from the move.
How Long Does Reimbursement Take?
Once you submit a complete claim, weight tickets, receipts, and required forms, processing typically takes several weeks, though timelines vary by service branch and current claims volume. Incomplete submissions are the single biggest driver of delay, which is why confirming you have every required document before submitting is worth the extra day it takes.
