Good Morning Stewart Family,

We at Stewart Moving & Storage would like to express our condolences for the victims and their families affected by the mass shooting that occurred in Las Vegas, NV this past Monday. During an open air Jason Alden concert a retired accountant, Stephen Paddock, opened fire on the crowd leaving 59+ people dead and hundreds injured. This shooter was outfitted with a total of 23 weapons in the hotel room and 12 of those were outfitted with a perfectly legal bump-fire stock which allowed him to fire continuously for 9-11 minutes. This attack will most certainly motivate several legislators for stricter gun laws. So we should all be aware of the proper policies and procedures when transporting our customer’s firearms.

This week I would like to talk about the proper procedures when transporting firearms. When shipping firearms, we must be in receipt of a firearm chain of custody form. This form, as well as the inventory, must notate the make, model, caliber or gauge, and serial number. Prior to packing the weapon, ensure that the customer has made the firearm inoperable by removing the bolt, firing pin, trigger assembly, and other arming parts. Also, ensure that any and all ammunition has been removed from the firearm. Once completed, continue to pack the weapon into a carton and write sporting goods on the box (the markings on the carton cannot indicate that is a weapon). Place security seals on the carton and proceed to load into the shipment. For international shipments, any weapon must be placed into container number one to insure easy access by customs officials.

During a delivery of a shipment containing a firearm, you MUST unpack the weapon and verify its contents by make, model, caliber or gauge, and serial number. If the firearm is not present at delivery, contact your dispatcher immediately!!! They will proceed to contact the carrier and local law enforcement agency. The local police will come out and take a statement from each member of the crew. This helps eliminate each of our employees from being implicated in a crime. Just for your information, the theft of a firearm is a felony that carries a penalty of up to 10 years in prison!!!

So stay safe out there, follow the proper firearm procedures, and protect yourself from being implicated in a crime.

Cheers

Robert Wright
